I have never been one to take the “normal” road.

Oftentimes, people decide to become Counselors because they had such a life-changing experience with their Counselor, and they want to share the love with others. Human Hands with Red Painted Heart Photo by Tim Marshall on Unsplash

Not me.

It wasn’t until I was literally in my Master’s Program in Counseling that I finally had my very own therapy cherry popped. It was both miraculous and completely normal feeling all at the same time.

I Was Crumbling

I was going through a period of intense grief and strong emotions revolving around some life-changing family health issues. hands all over womans face teeth panic Photo by Gabriel Matula on UnsplashDuring my 30 minute commute everyday, I would have to pull over my car at least once to cry my eyes out, have a panic attack, or both.
I was a mess.

My First Time

When I walked into my counselor’s office, I was immediately underwhelmed.
I sat on his couch, we talked, I cried… It was exactly how I pictured it would be.

When I was younger, I remember viewing this process as “Not for Me” even in the midst of a lot of death and trauma growing up. I thought, “It’s great it works well for other people, but I don’t need that. Little MinionPhoto by Jonas Stolle on Unsplash” I’m super strong in myself, and I roll with life’s punches just fine.
In retrospect, I think I didn’t feel worthy of receiving it. I thought, my problems aren’t big enough to warrant such a thing as therapy.

And, I was scared.

It wasn’t until I sat on that couch that I realized, experientially, the deep medicine of therapy.

The magic that happened when I opened up, let my emotions pour out, and left it all behind on that couch.

I felt heard.
I felt VALIDATED.
I felt lighter.

What Happens in Therapy?

Therapy is super normal and completely transformational all at the same time. monkeys talking Photo by Mihai Surdu on Unsplash
Yes, you simply sit down and talk with someone. Or, perhaps you’ll sit there and draw. Or breathe. Or visualize something.

In any case, it’s simple stuff. Nothing earth-shattering. Yet, 100% life-changing.

Imagine waking up tomorrow morning before your alarm clock because you’re genuinely so excited for the day ahead. You breath deeper, you feel lighter, you’re excited for what the world has in store for you.

And why is this? Because you know you’re ok.

A New Hope

You let your whole truth out, and you lived to tell the tale. Someone heard all about your thoughts, neuroses, idiosyncrasies, and accepted you anyway.

You saw that maybe things aren’t as bad as you previously thought. You realized there’s hope to live life on your terms.

You Are Not Alone

Your world doesn’t have to be crashing down in order to benefit from therapy.

Some of us can tend towards minimizing our needs, the depth of the hurt we experience, or how much life traumas are truly affecting us in everyday life.

The key to moving through the experiences that are keeping us stunted is to simply sit with them.
Speak about them.

Hold ourselves in our time of need, and allow someone else to hold the pain with us.

This is how we break our destructive patterns.

We forgive.

We heal our past wounds.

We rewrite the story.

We learn to love ourselves deeper.

Lighten Your Load

What will break one person feels light when split between two people.

Support is here for you.

I hope this will help you to see that if you’re having a hard time, therapy is a great thing to try. It feels really good to be heard, seen, and validated.

I recommend it for absolutely everyone.

Imagine

If everyone went to therapy, our world would look A LOT different. Birds flying free Photo by Gareth Davies on Unsplash

In fact, that is your journal assignment for this week. I’d love for you to write about What This World Would Look Like if Everyone Went to Therapy.

Can you even imagine it?

If everyone was taking care of him or herself?

Making sure they got the support and care they needed, dealt with past traumas, and therefore had the space to create thoughtful intentions as to the kind of impact they want to make on the world?

Let your mind go there, and write about it with no concern for “reality” as you know it. Let your imagination run wild!

You Are NOT Broken

Going to therapy does NOT make you broken or weak.

It makes you a courageous human being who is willing to look inside yourself to heal the parts of you that are no longer serving your highest good.

Literally everyone could use this.

So, if you or anyone you know could use some extra support in your life, I really recommend giving it a try. If you would like recommendations for you or a loved one, I am more than happy to assist in this area.

Anxiety, Depression, and Suicide are at an all time high. If you feel like someone you know (or your very own self!) could use some help, you’re probably right. Be there. And remember, it’s much easier to be there for others when you’re also actively taking care of yourself.
